Coming off gliclazide says GP is this sensible?

Another mate of mine told me yesterday that on recipt of his latest HbA1c result, under 6%, his quack said he could now stop taking his gliclazide. He does have a personal monitor and checks it fairly often.
The cynic in me ponders if this is not some perverse economy measure; he gets his meds free.
My readings have been well under 7 and yet no one said to me OK mate orf you come! Not sure I would like to anyway. A belt n braces man me with a second belt (exercise) for good measure. BTW he is also hypertensive like me and will not take statins. Plus he is a veggie who has he claims achieved his success by laying off the colas and chox. Oh were life that simple!
Again my eternal thanks for all comments.

Sounds like sensible advice from the GP to at least try reducing/stopping his Glic if the HBA1C is under 6% i.e. at a normal level. Why stay on any medication if not needed. Glic is a generic medication hence quite low cost so I doubt saving money was the motive. If your friend was indeed having non-diet colas no wonder he needed Glic if he is a Type 2; loads and loads of sugar!

I agree with Daibell. Don't take what you don't need. If he monitors and sees BG's rise a lot he can always go back on them.
