Comparison of treatment

Hi! I am newly diagnosed type 2, (nov 2012) and initial treatment with metformin had no effect (500mg x 2 daily) but 1g x2 daily has greatly reduced my blood sugar and hba1c. they are still not normal but seem to be moving in the right direction. I am not sure of the original values but my GP said they were very high. My initial appointments with my GP were every 3 weeks but he says he is now happy not to see me for 6 months.

Couple of questions, how typical is that experienece? I was just wondering because reading about others experience they seem more involved in terms of complexity. I read on this site that Nice recommend that type 2 diabetics should be offered some sort of metering device, my GP specifically said I don't need to monitor and that his practice will manage that . Am I unusual in not self monitoring blood glucose?

Thanks in advance,
Biffo

Its not unusual for type 2's to be told not to monitor themselves, been there and had the t-shirt as they say and now paying the price for not reguarly testing one self.

Its not the cost of the meter thats the problem as you can get these free via several companies or via the diabetic nurse (when I was diagnosed I had to pay for m meters). The test strips cost £25 + for 50, unless you go for one of the testers where the strips are around £6 to £9 for 50.

After a long period of not testing routinely I have just created a thread showing my results after not testing, and the results arn't that good.

Hi. A lot of surgerys will refuse a meter if you are on diet only or Metformin as you can't have a hypo that way but they ignore the fact that a meter helps to decide what foods to have and avoid. It's all down to cost and a bit of arrogance. It may have been me that said NICE now recommends the use of a meter. I can't remember the exact wording of the Oct 2012 update but I think it includes agreeing objectives with the surgery, but cost will still dominate the decision. You can buy strips on the web VAT free and I bought my last lot with a good end date on ebay for 1/2 price! So, do try to get a meter so you can find out the right foods for you.
