Complications.

Such a sad story Catherine, diabetes is without doubt a serious condition and it is very brave of Ms King to be so honest and open in her account of the early years with diabetes.

I second that, a brave story. I fully understand the "floppy foot" I suffered that in a motorbike accident. Mine has recovered to an extent, but not fully, but I know the frustration of having a body part you cannot control, you really can't do anything with it. I remember crying in joy when I got what looks like a huge shoe horn splint so I could walk without a cast on. I was diagnosed diabetic 4 weeks ago and at my next doctors appt I am raising concerns about my foot just due to my history.
 
such a sad story! unfortunately not uncommon. A lot of diabetics particularly those who had the condition as a teenager (although by no means all) have had periods of slack or no control. I know because I used to be one of them and am paying for it now with a retinopathy diagnosis. I remember learning during my psychology degree how difficult it is for most people to be motivated by something which may or may not happen a long time off (as most diabetes complications are) as motivation works best with immediate and definite consequences. The sad thing with diabetes is that by the time the complications set in it is usually too late as the damage has been done. I wish this lady all the best.
