This is not intended as political in any way - ust an observaion from my days as a ivil Servant and probaly just something that is apparent to all. When one government are very generous with benefits and perhaps do not check very stringently in checking entitlement, this causes outrage in some pepple and encourages others with sometimes very little genuine reson to claim . Because this serves politicaaal expediency nothing is done. Money for all! Then we have a change . The new government and many of its supporters are concerned about he welfare bill. {I am not just referring to he present situaion it has often happened in the past} he incoming government are ubnder pressure to make immediate changes/savings etc. How is this possible in a few years? It isn't . At least not in any way hat is fair to the individual. So what happens? You are no more an individual than you were to the previous lot who threw money at you so they could clai hey were helping families or the disabled. Incidentally , creaing larger families and more "disabled " along the way . Now if you are of working age - and this classification is rapidly being expanded - it doesn't seem o matter how much pain you are in ,or how ruly disabled you are - you are "fit for work " regardless." Foreigh firms are imported to deal wih this mater even. So in this situation who s to blame? It is all a matter of massaging the figures . Of course things change - sometimes for the beter sometimes not but individuals don't always have he capacity to change especially when old, sick , disabled or all three. The same point could be made about education . A generation of young people who have been expensively educated naurally have hgh epectations but find there are no jobs. University places for all was not an egalitarian decision but a means of appearing o reduce youh unemployment. The same is rue with the est strip issue . At one ime strips and meters were gaily slung at every newly diagnosed diabetic. T2s were not educated in their proper use. For many it was indeed , a great waste of money. So how was his changed? In any places by denying or restricting srips for all - even T1s for whom it could be fatal. The baby and the bathwater all the ime! he culprit is not one political pary or the oher. It is "short termism" and people like nanaclaire are the victims. Rant over. :)
