my dad is a type 2 diabetic and has been for 30 years - he takes insulin daily ..... the problem i have found is - he was going on about how expensive his car insurance this year - so i said - il sort it dad dont worry - ill look on line - anyway - ive come to a conclussion that he has not reported his diabetes to the dvla " or at least i think he aint" my questions are these -

would there be anything printed on his licence to say he takes insulin and that dvla are aware ?

if he now phones them to tell them - will he be fined ? as its been years.... he didnt know he had to

will he get banned? - he is currently having cataracs done on both eyes " he aint drove for a few months tho" - until he is seeing properly again.

will it effect his car insurance as its due for renewal this month.

i feel he has gotten himself into a pickle without even realising. - he has been insured for 11 years with the same insurance and has never had to renew as its always rolled on each year. it was only this year i decided to look at it because he not working now due to his health.
but his doctor has never declared him unfit to drive.

any advice is grealty appreciated - i really dont know what to tell him as he is very vunrable and wont really know what to do. it has also got my mum panacing too.
please help

He should report it to DVLA, I can't see him getting a fine unless he has been in an accident.

The insurance across the country went up last june by over 100% ( major citys only ) rural areas not affected.

If he declares to the insurance that he takes insulin, it should not go up due to the insulin or diabetes.

The way to check is get a quote as normal, then when you have the quote and want to start the policy, say " oh by the way, I take insulin for diabetes, does that make any difference to the price" they will then say no the price is the same.

Hope this helps.

He'll know if he has reported use of insulin to DVLA, because they will issue a 1, 2 or most likely, 3 year licence, follwing enquiries to his GP or hospital clinic or a medical examination at GP if he hasn't been seen reguarly.
Usually, car insurance companies just want to know that any medical condition has been reported to DVLA. If it hasn't, insurance is invalid, so he does need to check this.

The best thing to do is find out when the law had put this paticurler ruling into force. The chances are it was'nt in force at the time try your local law center before you contact the DVLA .They give free advise on various topics .
