I am still new to this forum, but I'm hoping that you maybe able to offer me some advice.
I am 43 and have been a well controlled type 2 since 1997 and used byetta and metformin until becoming unexpectedly pregnant last year, when I used insulin. After baby arrived in September returned to byetta and metformin and initially my blood sugars were slightly high (8 on average). Then in November they shot up to 14 fasting and 19-22 after meals. I was prescribed gliclazide in addition to my other meds but this had little effect. I have started a low carb regime (and dropped the glic)and this has pulled my sugars back down to 8-9 and 7-8 after meals, which is a big improvement but not good enough!
So, I ordered and started reading Richard Bernstein's book. At the back it says that oral contraceptives can interfere with the effectiveness of Metformin. I looked on the internet, which confirmed this could be the case, but not for all women.
Has anyone else any experience of this? My doubled blood sugars coincide almost to the day I started taking the pill (Progesterone only pill). Is this just a fluke or is it the potential reason that my body has suddenly gone potty?
I have never taken the pill before as a diabetic ( had previously been told that I was unable to conceive
