Hello guys,
I am a bit confused about some blood sugar readings I have had over the last 6 months and wondered if any of you more experienced people had any ideas as to what is happening.
Just some background info - 44 yrs old male overweight have basically lived like a slob for 3 years (working from home is a curse I tell you !). Have never had any diabetes symptoms.
I had a random blood sugar test last september 2010 (nurse using a glucose meter reading blood from finger prick) that was 11.2 and quite rightly I was told to get full blood tests done at the local lab for further diagnosis. I also remember having a urine test done 2 months earlier for a life insurance policy which was clear.
I didn't do the blood test, had to go off abroad due to family emergency and forgot all about it.
The doc followed it up recently, slapped my wrist for being slack and I went and got the pukka blood work done at the lab.
Results were 3.5 fasting and 4.9 A1c.....which is **** confusing to me as they indicate I'm normal - fasting actually a bit too low. But paired with the high reading last year doc said I may be pre-diabetic so cut down on the carbs, get exercising and get rid of the flab and we'll do more tests in 6 months.
...but how the hell could I have reached 11.2 last year if I was normal ? I do remember having a root canal done and crown replaced around the same time at the dentist due to a small infection in my gum at the time but surely a small infection like that wouldn't add much to my blood sugar reading.
So, is it possible to be normal FBG and normal a1c but still be having large blood sugar spikes ?
Should I ask for a glucose tolerance test ?
