just hoping someone can help me with this have googled it but as usual plenty of different answers I am traveling to Egypt in 6 week first time since being type 1 I have a letter of the doctor is this all u need for the airplane also have bought a wallet to transport the insulin my main question is how do you store the insulin when away do you put it in fridge can u do this was always under impression u couldn't do that once u had started using the pen

Hia. A letter from your GP detailing your condition and medication is usually all you need. Many of us on this site use the Frio cool wallets to store our insulin when it's hot and/or whilst abroad. So, when I used pens (now have a pump) I would carry the pens And spare cartridges in these Frio wallets. Once I'd reached my holiday place I'd store my spare insulin in the fridge in the room and just keep my injecting pens with me but in the frio. They are a bit expensive but are brilliant and last ages. All you do is take them out their inside pouch and soak them in cold water. The crystals inside then activate and they keep things cool for ages. Just google them - I know that amazon sell them but also your local chemist do as well. Hope this helps.

Hiya. I have never had to show a letter, I have always been ok just saying I have needles for medical purposes. Make sure you take your insulin cartridges in a box, preferably with a prescription label on showing your name and address. If you can get a letter for peace if mind then go for it.

I use a little cool bag thing on the flight to keep my insulin cool. I then keep it in a fridge once I get to the resort, if I can. Keep your medication out of the heat. Same with your BM.

Other than that, have fun!! :)

I have been issued with a diabetes passport from my GP. I was under the impression that all GP's surgeries were told to issue these to all insulin dependent diabetics.

Your right - so have I. It's in my bag all the time but because its tucked away into a credit card size holder I forget about it! That will be and useful thing to take on hols.

I have never even been told about the passport thing. I travel at least once a month and my diabetes nurse knows this. Wonder why they have never bothered to mention it?! Will be sure to ask at my next appointment :)

It's not a 'passport' in the travel sense as such - well mine isn't at least. They're little plastic credit size cards with our name and pics of all our insulin which you are meant to show the pharmacist when collecting our prescriptions to make sure we are given the right things. There is a piece of paper which the DSN and I have filled which gives name of doctor and emergency contacts and how to treat a hypo.

Those diabetes passports are not an official document. They're just a credit card sized card with your personal details on. I filled my own out and have never used it. I've travelled quite a few times with meds and never been questioned. I have a letter from doc also but never had to show that either.

Mine is not a plastic card. It's an official letter from my GP. It also lists all the insulin types I use and also all my other medications.
