Hi, have been T1DM for 57yrs. Now living alone and diabetes gone weird. I don't visit the Diabetes Centre as am fed up with being pushed to accepting artificial insulin and a pen. I'm quite happy with my injection and pork insulin.
Does anyone else feel unable to speak to the nurses or consultant because of this???

I honestly had no idea that anyone still lived on porcine/bovine insulin although this is the type I think I started on back in 1981. Are there any advantages to going on to the GM synthetic stuff\/ e.g. easier to get hold of? Or is it that you have tried the synthetic insulins and found them difficult to transition to? Never had any issues personally but am aware of my stepmum's mother having troubles adjusting her dosage when the insulin acted differently in her body and caused more hypos.
The problem that I could see is that in avoiding the diabetes centre because you d on't want to be pushed into changing your insulin is it not possible that you are missing out on help and health checks that you need? I am not the biggest fans of diabetes clinics/centres either but do value a system that allows me to get bloods tested, funding for my insulin pump, foot checks and an eye on my kidney health.

Having had diabetes for just over 40 years I remember the pork insulin glass and metal syringes , no blood sugar test, urine testing etc.etc. I’ve got to say from a totally personal point of view I am so glad technology has advanced , to be honest if it hadn’t I think a lot of people who’ve had diabetes over 40 years probably wouldn’t be in as good health as they are , if about at all. I’m not a lover of certain so called “ specialist”, but they are sometimes a necessary evil . I’m not surprised your diabetes “ has gone weird” .to be honest if I hadn’t gone to any diabetic consultant , weird wouldn’t be a term I would be using. I suppose it all depends if the “weird” feeling is something you want to get rid of ? If the answer to that is yes then you might have to think of taking that trip to the Diabetes Centre
