Confused - Blood glucose meter

Type of diabetes
Treatment type
Diet only
I had my first nurse appointment today where she lectured me endlessly. I was told not to get a glucose monitor as its not going to be of any use to me as im not on insulin. I was told on here to get one and see what food agreed and what didnt.
Thoughts?

We're right, she's wrong, and it's none of her business.

Hiya, basically it's your choice. Whilst a lot of doctors say type 2s don't need a meter, I struggled for over 3 years until I found this sight and took the advice of loads of people who have been here before me, bought a meter and starting eating to it. In a short period of time I was able to get my diabetes under control. I was able to understand What food I could and could not eat and how it affected my body. I don't think I would have been able to do this without the metre and the advice I received on here.

What ever you decide... Good luck

Yeah I thought as much to be honest. She seemed like she was a bit of a d**k. Really had a go about my Hba1c levels. In my defense I didnt know I was diabetic!? Bit deflated today was a telling off and ..here, have this magazine, now leave..

Will get a meter and see how I get on

They'll also tell you to eat lots of carbs at every meal and have some carbs for snacks between meals and severely reduce how much fat you eat, if they get around to giving you dietary advice.

Ignore that as well. You may want to try a low carb diet as many of us here on the forum have successfully used to get our blood glucose levels under control: http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

When faced with that approach at my own surgery, I asked the nurse, if she were in my shoes, would she not test. I think the squirming, avpidance and moving swiftly on spoke volumes.

It's your body, your condition.

I'm attempting to take care of my wife. Without the meter I would not have a starting point. I'm in the US, and it seems, everything here is about testing glucose level with the meter.

Your HbA1c was 87, I think? And no meds? OK, that's a good starting point. The nurse told you what she's told to tell you -- lots of us get that treatment.
What you do is what so many on here have done -- get a meter, test before and after meals, try low-carb-full-fat (for instance), and when you get your next test at the clinic they will be very surprised at how your blood sugar has dropped.
Then you do it all over again, only you will be feeling so much better. That's the story we read here repeatedly.

I definitely experienced the HCPs being very surprised.

Cheers, will look into the diet. Seems really odd looking at things like full fat milk..spent so many years trying to cut that stuff out!

I find it's a much more pleasant (and healthy) way of eating than a low fat diet. I use heavy whipping cream in my coffee.

I was told over the phone that I was diabetic and to just cut out fizzy drinks, biscuits, cakes etc...
No one bothered to even ask If I ate those things, which I didn't.
I was given no testing equipment.
Three months later I'd lost a stone, but my HbA1c had gone up.
Lack of knowledge and testing.
Got a meter, tested, and got my HbA1c down to just within normal range.
As @sanguine says, they're wrong, we're right
Good luck x

Pretty **** treatment to be honest! Im glad youve got it down though, ill get myself sorted with one asap.

I asked the nurse for a meter last week, got told the same. I am trying the low carb high fat thing. I dont eat meat. Yes it does sound odd, high fat. Have been on skimmed milk for years and low fat spreads etc.
Have only been on this a week and the weight has started to come off already. Have bought a meter. Now trying to see patterns re foods etc.
Good luck
