Confused by annual bs results

Hi, I've been on a low carb diet now for 2 months. I've lost a stone and a half and my blood sugar has been in around 6mmol for a month now down from 18mmol. Went for my annual bloods on Monday and today my diabetic nurse calls me to tell me my blood is still high, 62 same as last year and I need to go on glicazide as well as metformin. This might sound thick but if my own meter readings r saying my blood is in the normal range then shouldn't my hbc1a be too?

I would assume that the 62 is the HBA1C reading with represents approximately the 3 months prior the blood test so if you have only been low carbing for 2 months it won't be entirely representative. If you were averaging 18mmol before you took control I would have expected your HBA1C to have been far higher than 62.

HCP opinions do seem to vary as to what drugs are required at what levels. When mine went from 59 to 71 they decided to up my Metformin for 2 a day to 4 a day, no mention of having to take anything else, just another review in 3 months to see if it had worked (that was when I decided to do something so after the 3 months it was down to 56).

If you are happy on the extra medication than I don't see any harm in going on it, however I would have thought it might be worth trying to persuade your nurse to give it another 3 months on Metformin to see if you can make a difference. 62 doesn't seem dangerously high to me, particularly if you are monitoring your peaks yourself but your nurse might believe otherwise.

I agree with the above advice too . Its a carbon copy of what happened to my husband, he had a dreadful Hba1c , 86 , and had glicazine added to his metformin . He too had embarked on a lower carb regime a few weeks prior to his blood test , but the lower carb intake hadn't had a chance to show its full effect . He started on the glicazide and immediately began to have hypos of around 3.1 , so he was taken off them straight away , his latest Hba1c is much improved so it seems that the metformin is enough for now .

Hi Everyone
I managed to lose around 15 kilos and went on to Galvis Met 1000 and my blood sugar had stabalised dramatically. When i was diagnosed my blood sugar was around 24,5 mmol/L its now down the 5,4 mmol/L range.. But its been a long journey to this point. Had a complete lifestyle change.
Anyone else finding it difficult to get over come basic infections like flu ??

Yes , me ! I had the flu jab but it didn't work , wrong strain apparently , and I got flu at Christmas , took about two months to get over . Currently taking antibiotics for a nasty UTI , its been particularly painful and stubborn :( seem to be getting everything at the moment which isn't like me at all , think my immune system needs a massive boost :(
