Hi all, I am new to this website and relatively new to diabetes. I was diagnosed last july with type 2 and have managed to keep myself in check. I have been having occassional hypos on metformin (I am taking one metformin a day) which can sometimes happen when I wake up. (Levels as low as 0.6) My diabetes nurse feels I may no longer need my metformin and may be able to control my diabetes on diet alone. I don't want to get my hopes up and I am waiting for my hba1c's in a week, but what I wanted to know is can this happen?

Yes, is the easy answer, but it all depends on what you eat and if your exercising too much. That is a very low, low! What sort of symptoms did you have, could it be a false reading? I would stop taking the meteor in if you get constant lows.
Have you sleep disruption?

There are lots of people on here, managing their diabetes, by diet only. Some have never taken medication (I am one of those), and others have come off their medication when they have improved their control and blood scores.

Your 0.6 is extremely low. What sort of symptoms did you have?

I concur with the comments above..

It certainly happened to my T2 dad.. What are your blood readings on doing average the rest of the day.?

Thanks all for your replies. I am not overly active, but try to do as much exercise as I can. I eat really well but don't limit my carbs, I feel very light headed and faint when my blood sugar is low and I find it really difficult to help myself when I have lows. I was given a new meter by the nurse just in case there was a fault with the old one.
My levels fluctuate between 8 and 4. I have been known to have the odd 11 if I have eaten the wrong thing by mistake but that is quite rare. I have to admit though I have not checked religiously which is probably quite dumb.
I would love to be off my pills. The nurse has also mentioned stress masking blood sugar levels and pre diabetes.

Those figures don't actually look that bad to me.. If you get a "4" before eating & a possible spike of "8" an hour or so later without the general carb limiting you mentioned too?

My fathers condition was that he was a lot less active due to dementia, but I did manage to convince my mum who was his primary carer to cut his carbs.. Her experience with diabetes management is based on old school T1 dieting in the 1970's with me...! Lol
