Confused by whats going on...

I'm currently 13 weeks pregnant, I'm a type 2 diabetic (diagnosed nearly 2 years ago) went on Forxiga in July as diet control wasn't enough. Lost 10kg in a few months and had a surprise pregnancy in October. I stopped my Forxiga as its not safe in pregnancy and had to wait nearly 6 weeks for them to sort me out with Metformin SR.
I finally had my pre natal diabetic appointment and my paperwork states gestational diabetes. I know its type 2 and have been ignored when attempting to correct them.

My confusion with it all is that they have now booked me in for an Oral GTT........According to the appointment letter, its "To see if I have DEVELOPED DIABETES IN PREGNANCY."

Why go through this nonsense when I'm a type 2 diabetic who is already being treated with medication? It seems quite pointless.


I've also read the leaflet that came with my latest prescription that says not to take these specific pills during pregnancy. It's Glucophage SR.

I can't seem to get through to anyone from the diabetes team to have my questions answered. Can anyone help?

Congratulations on the pregnancy.

I have to be careful what I say here as we aren't medical professionals and forum rules don't allow us to give medical advice.

It sounds to me that your main issue is that they don't realise you are already T2 and you can't get through to anyone. (OK, my pregnancy experiences are very very old and I'm T1 but as a T1 my team were all over me the minute I mentioned I was pregnant.) Can you at least contact your GP?

I've got to say I agree, but as I'm not T2 I may not be the best person to comment. My guess (and I stress I am not a medical professional or a T2) is that this one will get sorted as soon as you manage to talk to someone and get them to realise that you are a pre-existing T2, (anecdotally I've heard that some T1s get this invite.)

Edited to add : maybe ask your pharmacy for advice on the medication if you can't get through to anyone else?
 
My gp found out about my diagnosis in November 2020.... no one called me or informed me at all. It wasn't until I was invited for a diabetic eye screening 3 months later that I questioned it. After finally getting in to the gp office and seeing the nurse, she told me that the diagnosis was from several months ago and no one could understand how they failed to inform me.

Even bigger **** up today when I went to pick up the metformin prescription from the pharmacy that MY GP sent a text to ME to confirm was sent to the proper location (last was sent via an online company that got held up in the Christmas rush). I got to the pharmacy only to be told there was no record of me being prescribed the meds. Called the gp who could see the text confirmation on their system, but no record of me being prescribed the new meds....I'm literally down to my last 4 pills and it took 2 phone calls with the actual Dr for me to explain I'm type 2 and diabetic and I can't keep going off meds because no one knows *** is going on.

I just feel like my entire pregnancy care is a complete joke at the moment. It's my 3rd baby so I'm not new to this. But I just don't know how much more I can tolerate these so called professionals. As if being a high risk pregnancy isn't bad enough. Ugh. I just feel like screaming.

First of all virtual hugs for what is a very stressful time for you. Also congratulations on your pregnancy.

I'm a type 2 who wasn't diagnosed until my children were all adults, however, I did have gestational diabetes so have a little understanding of the stress you must be feeling at the moment. My third pregnancy was also very high risk due to a number of factors.

What @EllieM said is correct that we can't give medical advice here, however, hopefully someone with experience of being pregnant after being diagnosed will come along shortly.

I don't blame you for feeling upset and angry at what has been happening. The lack of communication and being ignored when you tell them the facts must be very frustrating.

I hope you get some better support from your medical team soon.
