Confused. Diagnosed Type 2 with a H1C 7.3

Hello everyone,

A month ago i did a blood test and H1C was 7.3, therefore Dr prescribed Glucophage Unidie slow release 500mg 1 tablet daily with evening meal. At first i did not take them as i wanted to try and lower down my Glucose by changing my diet and exercise daily. I lost nearly 10Kg, from 100 to 90Kg so far. However when i check with my blood monitoring after fasting, glucose levels were going down to 5.8, however sometimes in up to 7.2.

So 10 days ago i decided to start taking the tablets, however yesterday and today after fasting levels were 7.3 and 7.4.

Glucophage suggests that after 2 weeks one should go to Dr to revise medication if required. Shall i continue to take the initially suggested dose or should i wait 3 months and do an A1C blood test again?

Any suggestions maybe?

Hi Ivan,

I have to ask, you do realise that the HbA1c test and the monitor you use at home give different measurements, right? A HbA1c of 7,3, I think, means an average glucose level of 10 mmol/l, and you've been under that regularly, so I think you've been doing pretty good. And when you say your fasted test can go up to 7,4 mmol/l, you know you might still be dealing witha higher case of something called Dawn Phenomenon, where your body dumps glucose in your system to help you start the day? Because that number does come down eventually, it just comes down very, very slowly. It's not just food affecting your fasting numbers, but also whether you had a good night's sleep or not, were awake for a while before testing, active before testing, stressed, ill, whatever... A lot can be going on to drive your fasting numbers up.

Have you tested around your meals? Those numbers are often more telling when it comes to the progress you're making. And I think you're likely to be making some, if you're dropped 10 kilo's already. Try testing before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite. If your blood glucose at that time is no more, and preferably less than 2.0 mmol/l higher than the first test, your body could cope with what you put in it. If you keep that going consistently, your fasting numbers will come down too. It'll just take nigh on forever, alas. (Thinks months, not weeks, more often than not).

Give yourself a little more time and test a bit more, see how you're doing.

I just realised that the test i had done was just a routine blood test and glucose mmol/L was at 7.3 after fasting. So it was not Hba1c test. Doctor had prescribed 1 500mg tablet a day of Glucophase Unidie and i have to go back to him after a month to do a test. I assume i should do an Hba1c and see from there.

Anyway, once again i thank you in advance. We continue to learn.

Ah, so that explains that... A HbA1c would be very useful, as it'd let you know where you stand and what you need to be aiming for. Fingers crossed your results will be improving!
