Confused on how much insulin I've injected?

Hey, my names Annabelle, I'm 16 and I've had type1 diabetes for a year and a bit.

Basically, at dinner today my blood sugar was 19mmol/L. I am ill at the moment so assumed it was to do with that. I gave my insulin dose, I definitely remember that, but got very confussed on how much I'd actually injected. My pen tells me the last injection I did, but thats all, and it told me that I did 10 units. I suddenly panicked because I first decided I would do 9 units, and then thought I'd add on one more as I'm ill. What I did was most likely injected the 10 all at once, but I suddenly freaked out thinking I injected the 9 units, and then instead of 1 more, 10 more units! That of course would be way too much! (19 in total.)
I had only used one needle, so it is unlikely I did anymore than one injection of 10 units, but I do sometimes do re-use needles (I know you aren't meant too, I must stop doing that.)

But I got quite confussed as what to do and have been worried for the last two hours or so. My mum said as it's unlikely I've done my insulin twice, to just wait and see what happens and if I go hypo, treat it. But if I do go hypo, I'm worried as 10 units is a lot of insulin to inject and it could take a while to get my bloods back to normal. I guess it's just a matter of monitoring my blood sugar closely for now, what does everyone think? Have you ever injected your meal time insulin twice without realising or realising a lot later, what happened?
The insulin I take is Novorapid. It's been 2 hours since I ate dinner so I am just about to check my sugar levels. I feel fine right now. I'm ill today, and blood sugars are commonly high when you are ill, so if I did take too much insulin, I have no idea what my bloods would do!

I hope my instinct is right and that I did my insulin fine. I've had a problem before where I forgot how much insulin I did or if I even did any and it turned out I did my insulin correctly and all was fine. I do panic quite quickly and confuse myself with worry. Thanks for the help. x

Note: I had my dinner early ( at 6:30pm) , so my blood sugar should be accurate before I go to bed (usually around 12pm)

If you injected at 6:30 then your NovoRapid should be about 80% used up by now with about 20% remaining in your system. Keep checking your bloods to make sure you don't hypo - it should be all out of your system by bed time.

My blood sugar is 14.8 now, so I think it's likely I didn't do those extra 10 units, but my blood is still up just because I'm ill.
But I'll keep checking my bloods this evening anyway, just incase. Thanks for your reply!

On personal experience I'd dispute that action time. 80% used in 2 hours seems very quick to me, when I've seen activity as far out as 4-5 hours.

On principal though I think you're right, it'll be finished by bedtime and will know what's going on.

I'm really not too sure when Novorapid has completly finished working, it's hard to say, even if you're a diabetes doctor/nurse! By the time I got to bed, 11:30 ish, it will be 5 hours since I last injected my Novorapid and should be an accurate enough sugar level for me.

Sorry Dave, my bad - 2hrs is 65%, 2.5 hours is 80%
Think Like a Pancreas, page 168, Table 7-6. IOB based on time since bolus was given

It should be done within 4-5 hours of injecting.
