Prediabetes
Im 50 next month, cycle 14 miles 5 times a week and more at the weekend.
I'm 6ft tall, weigh just under 13 stone and have been for the past 20 + years.
I went to my doctor for a health check and had a finger prick blood test which gave a reading if 7.1, 2 days later I went for a full blood test and the result came back as 42. My initial telephone advice was to lose weight and exercise !
I understand the concept of prediabetes but am really confused as to what's good to eat and what's not.
I do have a sweet tooth and do eat sweet biscuits, cakes etc but not to excess.
I'm not a great fruit eater and do not have sugar in tea etc.
I was advised by the doctor not to eat fruit but to load myself with carbs. I may have been ill advised but surely loading myself with carbs is not the greatest advice is it ? I have decided to cut out all cakes, biscuits etc from my diet.
Any advice is greatly appreciated,

Carb loading is definitely not a good idea, sounds like it may be more beneficial to adjust your diet rather than increase exercise.

Hi. Most of us would say what the doctor said was plain crazy. Carbs turn to glucose in the body and we all know what that means. Ask the doc why those of us on insulin increase our insulin to match the carbs in a meal; it's to stop those carbs and the glucose they create from increasing our blood sugar. Doh. So, yes keep the carbs down and have enough protein, fat, veg and non-tropical fruit to keep you feeling full. If I were you I would get hold of glucose meter and test every so often. It's always possible, but less likely unless you are thin, that anyone could be a Late onset T1 in which case blood sugar can creep up on you. Best to be on the safe side.
