I could be way off the mark, but it sounds like an allergic reaction. Do you have any particular allegies? Itching, skin rash, lethargy...maybe it would be worthwhile to check.Hi folks. Until late last year I was taking Gliclazide 40mg with breakfast and Metformin 1000mg and 80mg gliclazide with my evening meal. My pre breakfast levels were around the 5-6+ levels and my hblc checks were OK. In early December my morning gliclazide was discontinued as I was having frequent hypos. (Partly due to a lower carb diet and increased exercise.) I was really pleased to cut down on the meds. Fasting bloods remained OK then started to rise to 7-8+ in January possibly due to a minor virus followed by an itchy skin rash which lasted 6 weeks. At my recent diabetic check up in March I was put on statins which resulted in very bad muscle soreness. After a few weeks these were replaced by fibrates. As soon as I started to take these my lips, tongue and face felt numb and my brain felt as though I was tranquilised. I also started with thirst/ frequent urination. My morning fasting bloods were 9 and when I visited the diabetic nurse yesterday I had sugar in my urine sample. So I am now back on the morning gliclazide. I havent been for my exercises as often due to my virus and sore muscles so that could have contributed. Any ideas on what caused the numbness and brain fog would be welcome. Was it the fibrates or my raised sugar levels? And why the increase in levels. For the first time since my diagnosis I feel like I'm losing the battle. Your responses would be valued. Thanks.

Wow. That must have been a shock, Leslie. I was diagnosed in 2005 too. I haven't done too badly until the last couple of years but beginning to struggle a bit now especially with changes of medication. That's ok. I spent years in the wilderness until i found this. Thank you for the link. I stopped taking the fibrates after only a few days, restarted my additional morning gliclazide and have been asked to monitor my levels at specific times of day for the next 2 weeks to sort out my raised sugars before considering another treatment for my cholesterol. The numbness and brain fog have improved since I stopped the fibrates but my sugar levels are still raised and I'm definitely suffering from tetchy moods which is out of character for me. I'm hoping to get back to my regular exercise classes so maybe that will help. Thank you again for your support. It is much appreciated.Have you checked to see what side effects your particular fibrate drug may have?
