Confused. Sugar in fat?

My husband is a type 2 and saw a new GP today, one of the diabetic specialists at practice. This new doc was appalled at hubby's low carb diet. He emphatically said, No, no, NO when hubby said he'd had a fried breakfast and stated that gram for gram there is more sugar in fat than carbohydrates. What?? Have we really got it totally wrong?

I don't think that's right..........I mean fat is burned for energy, so it does get used in that sense, but I believe its a totally different process..........when you eat fat, it doesn't get converted to carbs I think.........

maybe someone else has a more scientific approach.........

Jeez...and he calls himself a doctor!!! Wow what ignorance. You keep doing what you are doing, I assume you are testing his blood with a meter? If its working on his sugars don't worry.

I wouldn't trust that Dr, on any subject. It is so utterly beyond stupid it actually is funny.

I think the doctor probably meant to say calories rather than sugar? There are supposedly 9 calories in a gram of fat, whereas carbohydrates and protein have 4.

I agree with @Indy51: he must have meant calories. But even if that was a slip of the tongue, I'd try to steer my husband well clear of someone that intolerant and inflexible.

I don't know, you go to medical school, play a bit of rugby, chase a few girls, drink a lot, read some lecture notes, manage to pass some exams, join the club and bingo, you're an expert on someone's life.

Some of us remember the medical students at uni!

Ok, sarcasm aside, there are (must be?) some very good doctors around including our own posting doctor (the wonderful research guy).

Still, you would expect a Dr who works mainly with diabetes patients to know the difference between calories and sugar/carbs.

I think the fear/horror/panic reaction to fried food has been bred into health care staff for so long now, that it is an instinctive reaction.

The man is probably so used to giving The Low Fat High Carb Lecture that he was on autopilot.

I hope you aren't going to take any notice of this advice? I would never encourage you to ignore highly knowledgeable, evidence based, skilled medical advice but I would be impressed if you ever actually received any! ;)
