Hi! I'm a 38 year old mum of 2 with a recent hba1c of 42, putting me in the 'prediabetic' range. I'm awaiting a phone call with my doctor to discuss further. I've always been slim, rarely drink and don't smoke. I've had a bit of a sweet tooth particularly since having my 2 girls but generally ate a fairly healthy diet. My father is type 2 as was my grandmother. This has come as a huge shock to me as being slim, I always assumed I could eat whatever I liked. Yesterday I monitored my sugars for a day, both one and 2 hours post-meal and none were above 6.4. I have however taken 4 fasting readings in a morning which ranged between 5.4 and 5.9. I recognise these are slightly outside 'normal' range but yet my post-meal levels seem OK? I've made some big changes to my diet over the last few weeks, cutting back refined carbs and almost all added sugars (in tea and on porridge etc).
I'm a bit confused as to what could be going on and would be grateful if anyone could help. I realise there are other issues which can skew a hba1c result but other than a mildly low hb (128) and ferritin level, all my other bloods were normal. Are the above fasting values anything to worry about and what should I expect in terms of onward support/referral from my GP? Thanks in advance!
