After a recent blood test I was diagnosed with type 2 dibetes, which came as quite a shock. After my first consultation with the diabetics nurse it was agreed I would try to lower my blood sugar with diet and excercise and my condition would be reviewed in 3 months. I was ok with this and altered my diet accordingly. I was also asked to provide a urine sample and it appears I have sugar in my water as well, which left untreated will damage my kidneys. Since this result I have been prescribed Forxiga 10mg. (The higher dose) This is where my confusion kicks in. The information leaflet states while taking this medication your urine will test positive for sugar, isn't this counter productive? I just wondered what other people on the same medication thought. Thanks.

I’m on 3rd week of Forxiga as metformin alone wasn’t bringing my blood glucose down. I thought metformin was the first medication they usually start you on. Might be an idea to ask why Forxiga and not metformin. If you start on a lower carb diet then the sugar in your urine will be less so hopefully avoiding the common side effects of UTIs and thrush. Well thats my theory and it seems to be working for me, plus on the positive side I’ve started to lose weight again.

Thanks Miss Muffett for your response.

I'm still trying to get my head around my diagnosis. I need to speak to my GP and ask the question. My hba1c was 57 so I thought by altering my diet and increasing exercise I could get it down further without medication. Your theory makes a lot of sense. I've only been on Forxiga for a week with no noticeable side effects other than feeling more tired than usual. Possible weight loss is a plus.
