Hi everyone 4 weeks ago I was diagnosed with type 2 but today I go to my drs and he tells me the rest of the blood tests came back and within a year I will be type 1, I was in shock he wants to put me on insulin as metformin and glictazide aren't working for me. Im really scared and work in a really stressful office which im sure affects my sugar levels I just feel helpless. Sorry to be such a moaner my family is great but I dont wanna put this on them.

Please don't be scared. I was initially diagnosed with Type 2, but I actually had a condition called LADA which is a slow onset form of Type 1. They diagnose this by carrying out two tests - a c-peptide test which measures how much insulin you are producing and a GAD antibody test that shows whether you have antibodies that are destroying your beta cells. From what you have said, I suspect you have had a GAD test and that it has come back positive - ask your doctor if this is the case. If so, you have LADA and progression to insulin is inevitable. It could take a few weeks, a few months or a few years. However, insulin isn't too bad and it LADA responds very well to it and gets your blood glucose into safe levels. If your blood glucose is constantly high, it puts you at great risk of serious complications, so this might be why your doctor wants you to go straight onto insulin to bring those levels down.

Hey Sarah,

The same thing happened to me, I had normal but low c-peptide and a whole bunch of GAD antibodies, my BS is currently quite well controlled with Metformin so I'm not at the insulin stage yet. I've been told I'm in a honeymoon period and not to get my hopes up but I have seen people on this forum say they have gone 30 years before needing insulin so it really depends on you.

One assuring thing for u is that every single person who has went onto insulin has sed it has made them feel a million times better so maybe it's not all bad :-) Gliclazide did not work at all for me but the Metformin is working...somehow!

Hey Sarah, I was type 1 from my first diagnosis, but I have friends that have said that when they were first diagnosed with type 2 they were unsure how to control it well enough with just diet or tablets. Since then one of my friends had to use insulin and has reported that he feels far better and much happier that he can use insulin to help control his sugars if he feels like having a bit of a 'treat' occasionally.
Once you start on insulin, it's amazing how quickly it becomes second nature and you find it easier as time passes.
Please don't worry, you may also find it beneficial to you. You also know that anyone of us on the forums will be willing to lend an ear or give advice if you need it!
I found that also with insulin my wife found that she knows more how to help if you need it, you either need insulin or sugar, so families need not get unduly worried on how to help but just be supportive when you need it.
Shout if you need anything or have any worries, I'm sure that goes for most of us on here!

The good news with type 1 is that you MUST take full control and therefore you are less likely to get as many problems! I was diagnosed 3 years back and for the first 6 months I had poor control, now I know how it works and I count carbs correctly, within reason I can eat whatever I like! It will be the same for you, push for the Dafne corse

You guys are the best im feeling better within myself and more positive. At the moment im on metformin and glictazide but my sugar levels are still high I exercise and have changed my whole diet but my levels stay the same grrrr so I think insulin is defo the way to go and thanks to all your support I think im ready for it :grin:

Hi Sarah ,A big HUG just for you :D .Just try and stay positive ,I know its not easy but always know we all care about you and just know we have all been in your shoes at some time .One thing always know you can change DRs or get another opion don't let them scare you or push you into any thing you dont feel comfortable doing or try talking to a diabetic nurse .Good luck and stay strong and happy .
