Hi..I am confused to say the least having just had an appointment with a specialist diabetic nurse

For 2 years 2 months I had been diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic..only to find out last week that I have "secondary diabetes" of Type 1..It has been arranged that I will start Insulin 4 times a day from the 24th of May

For the 2 years 2 months I have had quite poor control of my blood sugars and the medication just never seemed to work..I have tried all kinds of foods but everything I eat sends my blood sugars soaring..my BG only goes down if I miss a meal!

I have developed background retinopathy (which I know doesn't need addressing as yet) but all the same! also I have developed NLD in the last year

If I had had better care from my GP practise (I'd begged for Insulin as I knew something wasn't quite right) would I not have developed the retinopathy or the NLD? (which is really irritating)

I feel I should of had help sooner ..but I was just given more and more medication..which never worked in the first place

Hi. You have my sympathy. I was refused insulin 2 years ago but finally my last high HBa1C forced the GP to put me onto it. I wonder what the GP means by 'secondary diabetes of Type 1'? If you are quite young and not overweight then it sounds more like Late onset Type 1 (LADA). Good luck and you will find having the insulin, although a nuisance at 4 a day, will enable you eat more normally at last.
