Just need some advice at the moment i am not taking any meds as they caused really bad stomach upsets so my doctor has told me to try and control it with diet and exercise i have tried to have eggs bacon and tomatoes for breakfast and go low carb but after a few days the stomach up set started again i have an hiatus hernia and thing that the high fat low carb diet was a bit rich as with hiatus hernia i am supposed to cut the fat out so now i have tried to balance the diet out and i dnt eat anymore than 130gms of carbs a day .my levels at the moment are all over the place from 6.7 this morning to 11.5 after breakfast after original porrige its the same if i have weetabix but yet i can eat bread for my lunch and 2 hours later they wer 7.3 no 2 days are the same my level last night b4 going to bed where 14.5 .i suppose i am quite concerned at the high levels and what damage they are doing as im not sure if they qualify for insulin but i have tried so many meds and none of them where good for me i had great control on them but after 2 months the really bad stomach started that was on metformin and gliclazide i have also tried januvia which did nothing for my levels but caused ichy rash .Im really confused at the moment as to what to do as i have seen the nasty side of what diabetes can do as my dad had it and passed away 4 years ago from it ant advice would be welcome as the next step for me i think would be insulin but not sure if my levels are high enuf for that as they are anything from 6.0 to 15.0

hi thanks for ur reply ad no dnt think its that i have an hietus hernia ive had it since i was 19 and i think the metformin caused a flare up of that ive seen an injectable medication i think im gna go ask the doc about it its called lyxumia

Hi Cath

If you have any weight to lose this will help the hiatus hernia, so I would concentrate on the weight loss first.

What did you eat before bed that may have made your levels high?

Weetabix and porridge are notorious for blood sugar spikes.
If you can get out for a walk after eating this is really useful. Years ago people used to say 'walk off a good dinner'

Hi Cath, so sorry that you are having a rough time with your stomach. I too have a hiatus hernia ( + 20 years) this can be distressing and very uncomfortable. I tried to go low carb a few years ago and lost a lot of weight and had to stop as it really upset my stomach acid. I now eat little and often, I do try to avoid fatty foods, by testing before and after food I now know what spike my blood sugars. I do eat naughty foods, biscuits now and then, I only have1 if I have chocolate I have 2 squares instead of a whole block.!
Last year I came off Metformin as it upset things, I am on 50mg of Januvia, so far it has helped to keep my BS lower.

hi ive lost about 3 stone up to now i was 13.8 and im now 10.7 i am same i tried to low carb but it caused me to have a really bad stomach with the high fat content so now i try to balance my food with a little ov both i tried januvia and it did nothing for my levels they went up and i ended up with an ichy rash i feel like i cant win at the moment on sunday i was out all day walking around shopping centre well for atleast 4 hours and still ended up with a level ov about 12 after tea i have a few chips cooked in an actifry not cooked in any oil chicken breast and 1 spponfull ov mushy peas i ate a total ov 144 carbs all day any my level 4 hours after was 14.5

Great news on the weight loss! Try making chips from swede, they are much lower in carbs, they just need a bit more cooking. I sprinkle mine with paprika, it's not a strong taste but it gives a lovely colour.

I think it's going to be a case of balancing your carb intake to your blood sugar without adding too much fat to upset your stomach. Now you have lost weight you may find you can tolerate bit more fat in your diet than before.

hi i only tried the low carb high fat just after xmas at the weight i am now which is 10.7 and could only manage about 4 days of it b4 the stomach pains started so had to stop im off bak to the docs again on thursday to ask about lyxumia which is an injecable medication to see if i can try that and see if it helps stabalise my levels abit more its strange as i can eat the same things for 2 days and some days my levels are fine and some days they are not i think this is whats driving me crazy lol

I tries experimenting with portion sizes, this meant that my levels came down. I do eat every 3 hours if I can. That way I don't upset my stomach or send me levels up too high.

yes im the same i dnt tend to eat alot as my weight has stayed stable over the last few weeks but im finding really hard to control the levels no matter what i do i will talk to my GP on thursday if he wont give me the injecable medication i may try the januvia again as i think i do need some medication to stabalise it thanks for all ur replies

Hi,
I used to live on gaviscon, omeprazole, and zantec for acid reflux.

Very bad with fats, fatty pastry, too spicy foods.

When I was diagnosed, I was ok with metformin, but was swopped over to metformin SR, as they are supposed to be kinder on your stomach. Are you on the SR version?

As to diet, I swopped to a calorie counting, mediterranean balanced but very low fat diet to lose weight, and only foods that I get on with, low GI/low GL.
This worked well, I've lost weight, don't suffer acid reflux, and have good bs. And after many years, I have finally stopped the antiacids!
I still take the metformin, but don't suffer high bs when I miss this,
It's not a carb counting diet.

Breakfast, - 2 ryvita, low fat, cheese, ham.
Low fat Alpro, or Muller Light yoghurt.
A lot of salad, no dressing.
Beans, not baked, just kidney, butterbean, haricot......
A lot of home made curries, chilies, (oddly, now my acid reflux has gone, usually very hot, very spicy, a lot of fresh chilies)
A lot of fresh veg. not root veg though.
Lean meat, like chicken, not a lot of lamb or pork.
Quorn.
Livlife or Burgen soya and linseed, in small quantities.
Fish.
Home made sauces, no tins or jars.
Snacks, any cheats that don't really spike me, but nothing silly.

I do count calories, so it's all portion controlled, and when I've lost weight I intend to introduce small quantities of unsaturated fat back in, and cheese.

I eat to my meter, and found root veg, potato etc, pasta, rice, apart from basmati, bread, donuts, were all too bad, but ryvita, a bit of porridge, oak cakes didn't spike me.

Small and often also seems to work, so the low GI/low GL diet seems to help the bs stay down.

Exercise is alo good after eating to get the bs down again.

hi thank u for ur reply yes i tried the metformin SR i made me vomit quite a bit so had to come off them over xmas i was living on pain killers and 4 omeprazole a day it was quite bad i ended up in A&E where they thought i has pancratirus which i told them i didnt as i knew what it was but i got blood test for it anyway which came back fine im happy with my weight at the moment i think my GP was getting slighly worried last time i saw him as he said to me im getting smaller everytime he sees me lol i really dnt eat that much and i dnt eat anything thats more than 30 grams of carbs at any one time i did really well on the metformin so was gutted when i had to come off them im not on any medication at the moment just tryin to contol it with diet bt its proving really hard work to get a stable reading at the moment

What's your kidney function like?
You can up the protein as well, but you need to have regular medical supervision yo ensure the load on your kidneys doesn't become too much.
Little and often is always better, as if you are producing some insulin, a reduced load will help.
Low GI will help, as if you digest slowly, again it'll need less insulin, but for longer.

Hi Cath,
I agree with Douglas.
Ten years ago I was 14st which is really heavy for someone 5 foot nothing !!:confused:I now weigh 9st 10lbs. Since I started eating little and often I have got used to eating a lot less. I do keep the fat and I suppose the calories and carbs low and now wouldn't go back to eating massive meals again. have a nice glass of dry white wine in the evenings.

I think my kidney function is fine at the moment my gp has not said anything about it as i was only diaganoised last june so im still learning about it all but since ive been off the medication i feel so tired feel like i cud sleep for a week lol my stomach is fine now and i dnt need to take the medication for it anymore .The kidney fuction is the thing that bothers me the most as my dad was type 2 and lost all kidney fuction and was on dialysis in the end so i think this is why im worried about my levels being all over the place at the moment and want to try and stabalise them

hi bernie
i am the same m 5 foot nothing i have got used to eating alot less than i was and dnt really eat that much as soon as i was told i had it i completley changed everything as i had seen the after effects of what can happen my calorie intake is around a 1000 a day and no more than 130gms ov carbs a day i use my fitness pal so i can moniter my intake make sure i dnt go over my limits its quite hard as i have full time desk job so im sat most of the day i do try and walk around some during the day

You need to get full blood tests done, and regular reviews thereafter.
Kidney function should be one,
There is a steep learning curve though.
I presume you have a meter, as you test?
I found I kept a record of everything I ate, and worked out "good" carbs, and "bad" carbs, two hours after eating.
This worked well to decide what I could eat, then based my lifestyle around that, rather than weight every carb.
At the end of the day, we need a set amount of calories. I don't like saturated fat, I have good kidney function, so I do eat protein, some carbs, and some unsaturated fats. I also find some carbs and protein with the fat helps reduce the impact of the fats. But it's till low fat though.
It's difficult, as you need to consider more than just bs, you need to consider your weight, the hernia, and other future healt risks, as you say, your kidneys, which can be affected by high bs, and by too much protein.
Any diet needs medical supervision though, and screening for any adverse effects.

If you mean your calorie intake if 1000 a day, with 130 g from carbs, that's too low for the calories.
Also, it could be argued it's not low carb, as the carbs still provide about 1/2 your daily calories.

yes sorry it was meant to say 1000 looking at my intake last few days its been 1081 calories and day b4 was 1380 calories im trying to eat to not cause any spikes and also not cause any stomach problems which is proving to be quite a task i do eat cheese and meats and things like that im trying get a balance of both at the moment i tried to eat bacon eggs and tomatoes for breakfast but after 4 days of that the stomach pains started its hard to get that balance with no meds i was doing so well had an habc1 test which my Gp was amazed and pleased ad last june it was 101 had it done in nov again and it was down to 47 just a shame i couldnt stay on the meds :-(

Good bs.

The problem is the low calorie diet is much the same as mine, and I'm actively trying to lose weight.
You can't sustain it forever.

Also the "low carb" while being low in g, isn't that low in ratio.
Other foods slow down the intake of the sugars and starches, so even if you up the portion size, with the same ratio, it doesn't always up the bs., as you may digest it over a longer time. Check with your meter after the meal.

Try a lot more veg, things like cauli, broccoli, cabbage, beans, and you'll find if you cook the cabbage in a teaspoon of oil, the oil may be ok, and the oil will add 40 calories. The carbs from the veg shouldn't overly affect your bs, but will add calories themselves.
Livlife bread tends to be ok, as does Burgen soya and linseed, a slice with the bacon will take the edge off the fat.
The only problem I've found is "good" veg tend to be non starchy, and "shiny" so don't soak up the oil, as opposed to "bad" veg, like potatoes, that do.
Sweet potato and squashes tends to be a compromise for me.
Others try swede, not too bad for me, but it's different person to person.

But always check after with your meter.
