Confused???

Hi Jules, as the Dr has said your son is going through what is known as the honeymoon period. This basically means his pancreas is having a cough and a splutter before it stops working altogether, the length of honeymoon varies from person to person it could be a matter of weeks or months. Just hang tight and take one day at a time.

My son was diagnosed 4 months ago and for the last week and a half he was having no insulin at all. He was on a permanent low and this was when he was just on 0.5 levemir so took him off that and was ok until the last couple of days with sudden high blood reading of 21 with ketones of 1.2, I amediatly gave him 0.5 nova rapid and within half hour his bloods were 3.7 obviously feeling very ill. Poor little man. Unfortunately they are just very very sensitive to insulin and take a bit longer to work things out. It does generally take over 6 months anyway but it may take a while longer for our children to find reasonable levels. Dont be surprised if he ends up on none but I did wonder if he even had it but they do and I have experience other parents wondering the same thing.

Forgot to say don't worry about the higher levels of insulin later on. It is not like drugs it only replaces what the body needs, a bit like a vitamin. The insulin will not cause side affects obviously apart from the occasional low/hypo if a bit more sensitive that day. As far as I am aware this is how it works.

Im glad to ease your mind, it is a constant roller coaster and not everyone experiences the same thing. I was particularly worried when it started happening as his uncle and grandad who both have type 1 hadn't heard of this. I am in contact with our D nurse most days or weeks. I know you dont want to bother them but I just send a text so she can get back to me by text if not urgent but if she thinks we need to talk she will ring when she has a moment. That is why they have someone on call at nights and weekends because sometimes we just need to ask a silly questions which they can answer in less than a minute. I know you feel silly asking sometimes but I bet you are not the only one to ask it.
