Confusing diabetes

Sue dodds

Newbie
I have diabetes a cas 3 . Had surgery nearly 5 years ago. Not sure that many Dr's know what a cas 3 is and some diabetic nurses to. Have been asked whether I had a pancreas still and that put doubts in your head it did at first for me. My bg is bad most of the time constantly fighting to keep it down . My bg should between 5-10 . Mostly high . On toujeo long acting and novorapid for meals . Also had spleen out and gastrectomy surgery . Eating is a nightmare I feel I can't have so many things which we all took for granted. Does anyone have any ideas for me to have a better health and to be able to keep bg down . Thanks I'm new on here .

Don’t have type 3 but wondering, as a type 1, if your long acting insulin dose is set correctly? Am assuming you have a CGM? I was advised what my waking CGM reading should be and adjusted my dose accordingly. But we’re not allowed to advise medicine doses here, so maybe discuss with your endo. If your long acting insulin dose is adjusted properly you should be able to eat whatever, within the restrictions of being minus a spleen and other bits? Don’t know about those either.
I had put myself on a very restrictive diet pre T1 diagnosis, due to a misdiagnosis of IBS. So it was a revelation to me that with insulin injections I could eat loads of things I couldn’t before. Brown bread, cabbagey things etc.
I discovered that fibre is my friend for keeping BG down, so we stopped peeling potatoes and I eat the skins of the small amount of fruit I now eat. I check the carb fibre ratio of the bread I buy. Have learnt to steer clear of white rice and discovered that a Sunday roast type meal, with several vegetables is very good for keeping Bs steady, not too many roast potatoes and am now making mini Yorkshire puddings!
good luck finding an eating regime that works for you.

Sue, I'm Guessing that they removed the Tail of your Pancreas, given you lost your spleen, or did they remove all of it? I had the head and neck of mine removed. But still ended up with type 3c diabetes.
I am very fortunate I have some specialist nurses at my local hospital's diabetic unit, and I can phone them oe email them. Now with my CGM I can also send them a report about what has happened.
I find my sugar levels vary wildly with peaks after eating, but also lows usually after sleeping or exercise. Apparently variation is more extreme in this condition, but my nurses seem cool with it so long as I am in range 2 hrs after eating.
If you have access to a support nurse it could be worthwhile talking to them.
At the moment I have not changed my eating habits, but I am seeing a dietician next week so that may change…
I hope you get it sorted. <hugs>
