Anonymous Question Confusion with Fruit

The only fruits I eat are lemons and very occasionally strawberries and raspberries. Rhubarb is also okay but I can never get hold of any.

This is an extract from Dr. Unwin's paper

"Fruit is trickier; some have too much sugar in and can set those carb cravings off. All berries are great and can be eaten freely; blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples & pears too, but not tropical fruits like bananas, oranges, grapes, mangoes or pineapples"

All berries are great and can be eaten freely; blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples & pears too

I would not follow Dr Unwin's advice , eating the aforementioned fruits freely would result in uncontrollably high blood sugars. What utter nonsense.

I stick to raspberries and strawberries but in small measures. Blackberries spike me and I don't like blueberries. I keep away from everything else. It's all trial and error if you are using a meter, and we are all different with different metabolisms.

I have found I can eat blueberries and raspberries in any reasonable quantities without much impact. I eat apples and can also eat bananas. I have had a small amount of melon (gala) and didn't see much reaction from it either. I often eat dried fruit (the worst kind ever) and manage these too. It comes down to eat and test.

Be aware though that fruit contains a lot of fructose that your body cannot regulate with insulin. So it goes into your blood stream like a non-diabetic and your liver has to utilise it to replenish its glycogen stores. If you have a lot of fat around your liver then you can't process it properly.

In general, Dr Unwins advice is good with regard to good and bad fruits, BUT I agree with Cblake that you should control the quantity

To me Dr Unwins advice is bordering on criminal negligence. Inexperienced diabetics could follow these nonsensical recommendations simply because he is a doctor and end up in a bit of a mess. If I followed his advice i would undoubtedly end up in ketogenic coma!

For me I have found that apples, pears, melon etc, etc will make my bgs go to the sky. I have, however, learned that i can tolerate moderate amounts of berries. (Am on a lchf diet - with occasional aberrations - hmm).

And as an aside: I found that a small handful of frozen berries topped with high fat Greek youghurt will make a lovely desert - the berries will kind of freeze the youghurt, and it feels like icecream.

I eat berries but can't eat apples, bananas and oranges make my bs go through the roof.
I agree about the berries and greek yoghurt, I add nuts for a but of crunch
