Have a look here , particularly at the section on Side Effects. I found that one brand of metformin gave me unpleasant and continuous nausea while the brand I was originally given only caused a bit of the "bad runs" when I increased my starchy carbs intake, and this only happened two or three times. Changing to slow release has solved these problems for me. So it's worth both watching what you eat and asking to have the slow release version.
