Hi all it's not actually me that has the diabetes but it's my brother who lives with me. In August my brother was diagnosed with diabetes type 1. His symptoms included excess thirst he was drinking 8 litres of pop a day, needing to wee all the time, sleeping all the time, pain in his stomach, sweet smelling breath.
When i eventually took him to the dr's she rushed him up to the hospital saying she thought he was going through diabetic ketoacidosis. (she couldn't test his blood to see what the level was because she couldn't work out how to work the tester.
When we got to the hospital they tested his blood glucose 28 and checked for ketones in his urine he was full of them. When they took other blood tests they found he was indeed D.K.A. In fact it was touch and go for a while.
While in hospital he was very intolerant to insulin and was taking 5 insulin injections a day along with metformin.
The thing is ever since he's been home the amount of insulin he has needed has dropped to a level where at the moment he isn't having any at all just metformin and still having hypos on them.
The thing im confused about is now the dr is saying its type 2. However with type 2 you cant go into D.K.A. The nurses were thinking maybe it was type 1 honeymoon phase which does seem more like what im thinking.
The reason the dr is saying he might have had D.K.A was he had an infection, however they couldn't find any infection when he was in.
The dr is going on what is happening now which is his bloods are never more than 4.3 after meals and usually 3.0-3.6 before eating.
His HbA1c was 14.4% on admission.
would be greatfull for any ideas.
