Constant high readings

hi

Ive only recently been dignosed with diabetes type 2. It was picked up during a pre op assessment, i had my operation refused because of it.

My fasting reading was 17.8 the first time and 12.7 the 2nd and my 3 month 12.8. I am not overweight, am very active, horseriding 7 days a week. I do not feel ill and would not have known my glocuse was high other than i drink a lot.

2 weeks later my reading was 20.7 so the nurse put me on a low dose of tablet, half a day with breakfast. Now for the past 4 weeks, i am eating all the right foods but my sugar levels are still sky high.

When should i be testing myself, i have bought a glucose machine and half an hour after my breakfast on thursday it was 19.7 then after my lunch the next day it was 24.7 today after breakfast it was 23.7  Am I testing at the wrong time? I haven't seen the dietician yet. Will it come down slowly?

I feel like im fighting a losing battle :(

Hi, Happyhacker, and welcome!

Daisy1, who greets our new members, will be along soon to welcome you properly. Meanwhile, do try not to panic - you're among friends here, who all have diabetes or who care for people with diabetes, so there's lots of good advice around.

Testing - the advice is, to test on waking (fasting blood glucose test), then just before every meal and 2 hours after every meal, and then just before bed.

If you've been testing just 30 minutes after eating your readings will be high because your body is still processing your meal. What you are aiming for is to have the 2 hours post-eating reading at about the same level as it was just before you ate. This may take time to get in control of, but you're not the only one this has happened to, so don't despair!

Many of us find that we need to reduce the amount of carbohydrates we eat (carbohydrate turns into glucose when it's metabolised in our bodies). Cut down on things like bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, starchy veg, as well as sugary foods (which goes without saying!) Do it slowly - 1 slice of bread instead of 2, 1 potato instead of 2, etc - and you should soon find things will calm down.

Hae a read around on the forum, there's lots of good advice here, and don't be afraid to ask questions - there's no such thing as a silly question on here! There's a lot to learn, but we've all been through it, and we'll give you all the help we can.

Don't lose sleep! :D
