Why would a new member attempt to begin a topic via conversation, rather than starting a new topic? I am very puzzled

I've known this to happen before. It is not easy to navigate first time around for some.

If you view the Forum via Recent Posts, there is no option, on that page, to start a new thread. As far as I can see, to start a new thread, one first must select a sub forum. Not everyone wants to be incredibly clicktastic.
