correction dose increase

Hi All - as I am pregnant my ratios keep changing so I now need twice as much insulin(novo) at lunchtime per CP as before, does this mean that I also need to increase my correction dose by the same factor? Eg previously a correction dose of 1 u would drop my bg by 3 mmol but should I now inject 2 u to get same drop?

Posting in this forum rather than gestational as not many people on the gestational subforum are dafne trained.

Thanks

AC

Hi,
I have had a similar issue with my ratios, not due to pregnancy but having the same outcome. I discussed itt with my DSN and ended up increasing basal dose slightly, having double (2:1) blous dose, but keeping correction dose as it was (1:1).
This worked for me, although I would say the best thing to do would be to discuss it specifically with your diabetic nurse/doctor.

I agree that you should disguss this with your HCP...

I would keep to your normal dose and check to see how well it works, if you find that you are constantly having to do another correction to balance your blood glucose, then it's likely that you need to combin both as the correction..

But you will find as you go through the different tri-misters of the pregnancy that your control will change as well if I remember rightly (it's 19 years since having my younges) that as you near the end of the pregnacy that insulin needs can lower again.. But as usual with diabetes, each of us will always react different when it comes down to control

Well I injected on a 2:1 ratio for my lunch yesterday but shot up to 11.9 so had 2u novo as a correction dose then it came down to 5.5 a couple of hours later. Therefore 2u = apx 6mmol/l fall so I guess my correction dose is still 3mmol/l per unit. But I have increased my lunchtime ratio to 3:1 now and that seems to be working ok, a little too strong perhaps as today fell to 5.3 one hour after and 4.1 three hours after lunch but that's preferable to going up too high and having to correct.
All I seem to be doing these days is injecting insulin and testing but hey, will be worth it when the baby arrives hopefully healthy and not too big for dates,

Thanks

Hi

Instead of using a carb ratio of 3u to 10g why don't you use 1u to 4g and work out your calculation that way. So much easier really :)

Hi,

When i was pregnant i used to up my correction by one each time. I only had to do this about once a month and my carb ratio was the same as yours....that only went up once every 6 weeks.

I would suggest trying to put it up and then check what is going on and any difficulties discuss with Diabetic Midwife.

lots of luck
