Corrections - how do they work

Hi, just wondering how insulin corrections work, and how much insulin to take for a correction. I know when you are high you can take a correction, but is it a once off injection I between meals or to be combined with the bolus injection when you have you next meal.

Depends on you really. Some will correct after the two hour mark if they are unusually high. Or, if close to a meal add it in then. Trouble is can be high.at the two hour mark, but normal before next meal due to activity, quick release sugar meal, timing of insulin, meaning any correction would cause a hypo. You have to see what works for you. There is a correction factor as a GUIDE, where you take an average number of total daily insulin, fast and quick acting and divide by 100. For example a person having 25 basal, and 25 quick acting units a day would have 50 units. So, 100/50= 2. This would estimate that one unit would drop your sugars by 2. Not always accurate for most due to differing factors, but a general guide to start, test and learn.
