Type 2 Could I be diabetic?

Hi everyone,

I'm completely new to this forum but I'm having a bit of a scare. I've been quite unwell over the past month and a bit. I've had a UTI twice, thrush twice (it's still lingering), a flu thrice (third one came on yesterday) and a tooth infection once. I got flus frequently last year too (9 in total I think) from September to April as well as a random bout of mouth ulcers (like 20 all at once having not had a single ulcer prior to that in all my life). I just chalked the flus up to moving to a new country and not being used to the viruses and things and the ulcers to stress. But I know plenty of people new to the UK, even from where I used to live that only caught one flu and have been fine since.

Now, I keep having to pee every 10-30 minutes pretty much or 5 minutes after drinking a cup of tea. I often wonder what I'm even peeing out because I seem to pee out more than I take in. How much I pee out every 10-30 minutes varies considerably but I never seem to feel fully empty - maybe that's indicative of another UTI rather than diabetes? I'm not thirsty constantly but I do randomly get VERY thirsty. I'm not one to be woken up by thirst unless I've had a lot to drink the previous night but I've noticed nowadays I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night because of thirst or wake up in the morning feeling like I haven't had a glass of water in a century. I am able to relieve this random thirst though so maybe I'm just dehydrated because I keep peeing but that's definitely something new that's come on in the past month.

I guess what I'm concerned about is that my mum has Type 2 diabetes and I have quite high cholesterol (total and LDLs) and that apparently puts me at risk. I'm only 20 and underweight but high cholesterol runs in my family. I was very briefly on statins which brought it down but it's still on the lower end of high when I barely eat really. I don't know if this is relevant but my uncle on my dad's side also has Type 2 and my sister got gestational diabetes when she was pregnant. I also have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Lastly, I've been really badly constipated since mid-August. I only have a bowel movement every week or 2 and get abdominal pain after I eat. These weird symptoms have all started at the same time and I'm quite concerned about them. I have an appointment tomorrow with my GP to discuss all of this but I just wanted some opinions to mentally prepare myself if some of this does sound like diabetes.

Thanks.

Hi. It sounds like you have some symptoms which could be diabetes. I wouldn't worry about the cholesterol being related to diabetes as I don't believe there is any evidence they are linked. However, it's important your LDL/HDL ratios and trig figures are OK apart from the diabetes. I would certainly see the GP and, of course, you could always have a spot blood sugar check at the chemist anyway and also buy a glucose meter. The GP should do a spot check as a minimum.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'll definitely mention that to my GP. I should probably see if I need another blood test as it's been about 10 months since I last had my cholesterol levels checked. Regarding the spot check, would it be valid if I've eaten normally in the 8 hours prior to the check? I don't normally eat breakfast anyway and my appointment is at 11:10 so I could fast if it's necessary for the test, but I've got some morning sessions at university on Thursdays that I try to eat breakfast for as they involve a lot of standing up and I get dizzy very quickly, especially nowadays.

Thanks again.
