Firstly, i'm very sorry to post a new topic which seems souly aimed ay myself as opposed to a large discussion, however I was hoping you guys could possibly help me.
I'm a 17 year old girl, and I think I might be diabetic.
I don't know much about the symptoms, however I urinate frequently and have on several occasions been uncontrollably hungry, these occasions are becoming more and more regular. My aunty is diabetic, is it hereditary?
Please could some one offer me some advice as i'm too nervous to talk to my parents about it.
Where could I possibly go for a test? Would my local GP be able to offer the service, and do you think it is worth it or could this just be normal.
If any one could offer me any advice, regarding symptoms, personal experiences (only if you're comfortable of course) or anything at all, I would much appreciate it.
Thankyou,
nervous teen'. xx

It is often hereditary but a family history only increases your chances of having diabetes, it doesn't make it a sure thing. Those symptoms are technically consistent with hyperglycaemia (too much sugar in your blood).

Your doctor will be able to do a quick check of a urine sample. If you're diabetic it will have sugar (well, sugar of a sort) in it. There are some drop-in centres around the country, and often Diabetes UK sometimes run testing events where you can walk in, get your finger pricked and have your blood glucose level tested.

It's all very simple, very straight forward. :)

I can't offer much in the way of pre-diagnosis experiences, since I was so young I can only vaguely remember the 24 hours prior to my trip to Accident and Emergency.

Finally, try and be calm about it. If you do have it, it's a pain in the ass to deal with, but it is manageable and you can live pretty much a normal life. And even if it's not diabetes, you'll be on your way to knowing why you need to go to the loo so often! Keep us updated eh?

lion is right,
it may be diabetes it may not but u need to get it checked as if it is type 1 you can get really ill really quick, your gp surgery will test u and all lloyds chemists also do blood glucose testing free, that is what i did, i fasted over night then went there as soon as it opened ,unfortunately before i had my glucose intolerance test i ended up feeling atrocious in a and e,
plz get checked and if you have any more questions just ask ,someone ere will be able to help you :D

If you are nervous about going to see your local GP, if you have a branch of Lloyds chemists near you then they off a drop-in testing service. The test itself takes only a few seconds and is anonymous.

Do get tested ASAP - all GPs do this very routinely. You might have diabetes, but there are also many, many other things that it could be - or maybe there is nothing wrong with you at all.

If you do have diabetes, then it is important that you find out as soon as possible. If that is the case then don't panic! It is perfectly possible to manage the disease and lead a normal life. If it is undetected, though, the symptoms will gradually get worse until they start to cause you really serious problems - and by that stage some of the damage might be irreversible.

Most NHS walk-in centres will do a simple blood or urine test, but if they find anything they will probably send you to your GP for a "glucose tolerance test" (which is the only really fool-proof way of diagnosing diabetes). So, it is probably easiest if you just go to your GP and tell him or her that you are worried about diabetes, and ask for a test. Also, if it is something else then your GP is the best person to diagnose it, and get you the treatment that you need.

Hello,

I was diagnosed with diabetes (Type 2) 18 months ago. Neither my family nor my known relatives are known to have diabetes; so you can still have diabetes if no relatives have it. Also, although there is more likelihood of diabetes if relatives do have it, you could still be free of diabetes. Your symptoms do seem to indicate that you might be diabetic, though I am no doctor.

It must be very worrying for you to think you may be diabetic. You do need to see your GP and if necessary be quite insistent & make sure they test you. Normally they initially do a Fasting Blood Glucose Test which means you eat nothing overnight (but you can drink water) then attend an early appointment the next morning (if possible) for them to take a blood sample; this is usually pretty painless. Unfortunately you sometimes have to be re-tested more than once before you get a low result that then triggers further testing. Do not give up if you first test is negative. Go back again & ask for another one a bit later. It is your health at stake, not theirs!

I was tested several times by my GP & the results were borderline & they said "the results are OK". It was only when I was hospitalized with something else that Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed.

If you are diabetic, you are more likely to be Type 1 diabetic, as you are so young (I am a 56 year old man).

You are very brave & very sensible coming on this forum. I hope things are sorted out for you soon. Good Luck! :D
