Hi, i don't know if anyone can help, or shed any light, but i am concerned that my 4 year old son might have diabetes, or i might just be completely paranoid!
He had a nasty tummy bug last week so we kept him home from pre-school. I thought he was better so he went back yesterday, but today had a phone call from his teacher saying that he wasn't well.
She said she had been struggling to keep him awake, he was very hot, and that he was drinking loads, and he hadn't eatten much (probably because he fell asleep at the dinner table). She said that he hadn't been running around and hadn't been doing anything energetic, just not wanting to do much and didn't seem himself. I picked him up and wondered if he had not got over his tummy bug yet. After thinking about it tho, he has been falling asleep before dinner for the last few nights and waking in the night saying he is thirsty and asking for drinks before going back to sleep. He hasn't had any late nights and sleeps really well, so there is no reason for him to be so tired.
When i picked him up from preschool this afternoon i struggled to keep him awake too, although he didn't eat or drink anything, just slept, or laid of the sofa not doing anything. The reason i am paranoid maybe is that my mum has diabetes, and has had it since she was a teenager, and i remember growing up seeing my mum in her hypo or hyper episodes and being completely scared seeing her like that. Even now i know when my mum isn't right, and my son isn't right lately either, but could it just be this tummy bug lingering on?
Ive not overly noticed any weight loss in him, he has a good appetite and would eat and eat if i let him, and has a sweet tooth, but what 4 year old boy doesn't. His preschool commented on his thirst and tiredness today. I tried to make an appointment for him to see the doctor but was told it will be 2 weeks yet before i can get him in!! I did think about taking him to a&e but am i over reacting?
