Could this be diabetes?

Good afternoon. I have a little problem that I need help with...

My wife recently went to her GP with symptoms of constant tiredness, occasional pins and needles in feet, increased thirst and nocturnal toileting. Her vision is quite bad for reading. Her doctor put this down to low thyroid function (as there is family history) and put her on iron tablets. I had suspected diabetes and this was the reason I persuaded her to see the GP, but she did not seem to think so as a "quickie" blood test done by the nurse showed normal blood sugar (it wasn't a fasting test or HbA1c). The iron tablets have not made any difference!

Now my wife has started complaining of numbness/weakness in her wrist and drops things occasionally. I strongly suspect carpal tunnel syndrome. She seems to be in denial as the GP supposedly ruled out diabetes (on the basis of this blood test) but I'm not convinced. I have discussed all of this with her (which she understands) but worry that she will leave it all too late. I am also very worried that she has the beginnings of neuropathy which if left untreated, will become irreversible.

How can I get her back to the GP?

Oh dear poor you. Are there any other Gp's she can see? She does need to go back and ask for an Hba1c blood test.

Hi. You could go to the local pharmacy and have another free random blood test. You could also ask for a free blood glucose meter from one of the manufacturers and buy some strips. You could then get your wife to test her blood 2 hours after meals a few times which will be a better guide than a single random test. Yes, the symptoms you give could well be diabetes but perhaps something else? Even so I think the GP/nurse needs to do some further finger-prick tests as a minimum.
