Hi Friends,

Had a strange day started of ok, then realised I wasn't sweating or feeling has hot I have been, I hate the heat!!, then I felt a little out of it, very emotional, a bad head ache, very slight confusion...I am type 2 diet only, and had no carbs today has I usually do have them with no effect, I don't have any testing strips to see what if anything was happnening, I just wondered if this could be anything to do with diabetes? also why does it say to becareful regarding the hot weather when you have diabetes? many thanx I hope someone can help me please? many thanx xx

Its a bit hard to tell without having a meter to test ones levels, though with me this heat is knocking my BS levels all over the place. I had my worst hypo in the early hours of this morning @ 2.6, felt really rubbish, then going the opposite way into the 13.0's.

Thanks so much for the reply :)

I don't get strips on prescription, I think I need to buy some, do you test yourself when you feel rubbish? xx

Testing would eliminate, or prove it to be, the sugar level so yes if I suspected it was the cause of anything of course I would test.

Hi Michele51 :)

You do need a bg meter to help you with your control, there are some good deals on amazon and ebay ( you will get lots of advice shortly )

The odd experience you had, could have been caused by many factors,( mild hypo seem likely )

Hope you sort it out.

Roy, :)

I always test if feeling differently, the results either confirm that I am low or even going high, my symptoms for highs and lows are different. The meter is proof that ones feeling are correct or wrong, if I treated a suspected low but the feelings were to do with something else, I could go high if I was in the normal range, especially as at one point as I was getting false hypos (as sugar levels were way high).

As for meters these are not normally a problem in getting one free, by ringing the suppliers and answering a few questions they generally send you one free. The likes of Bayer, Abbott Medisense, Accu Chek, life scan have all been good in providing meters have a look on their web sites to see which meter you like, some they hold for people on insulin though would offer an alternative.

Strips is down to the post code lottery and your practice, and you may need to justify why you want them on prescription, some will and some won't give you them on prescription.

If you want to self test and have to fund the cost of the strips Abbott sell the strips direct to you a lot less than you can by them over the counter. The cheap strip option is the SD code free system (on amazon), also is the supercheck2 system, but go direct to them as some sellers sell the supercheck strips at a lot higher price.

I have bought a couple of meters and a good value ones are the Accu Chek mobile at just over £18 on Amazon and mine came with a 50 strip cartridge, though you will need to get more lancet cartridges. The Bayer Contour next usb came with 25 test strips, I had both of these sent free, though did buy a spare accu chek from amazon, these 2 meter are my favourites for different reasons and both suppliers have excellent c/s.

Hi
I am also type 2 but taking medication I'm no expert but the weather has really affected me
Just after a short walk in the heat I start with the shakes but I always carry glucose tablets to perk me up then I have a snack unless it is near a meal time
Hope this helps a little also might be worth investing in a blood testing kit :-)

Hi

I had a meter given to me by the DN, but I wanted another to keep in the car, I entered here http://www.diabetes.co.uk/promotions/bayer-meters.html and even though the competition had finished they sent me a complimentary meter.

If you call customer services I am pretty confident they will send you a free meter, for them its a loss leader as they want to sell test strips and lancets.

good luck,

If you get some and test next time you get to feeling like that and you are too low take the meter to the Doctor to show him you have had a hypo and therefore for safety sake they should prescribe you some test strips so you can test. This is especially important if you drive or operate any machinery etc.

Angie
