Type 1.5 Covid booster question

I am a 65 year old Type 1 Diabetic. and one of the key workers. So, this week, I was told (on Monday) to get my Covid booster, which was Moderna Spikevax.
The after effects were downright shocking! My sugars climed to 30 at the top end and despite copius amounts of insulin to try and draw them down, got down to around 20. I could not get them lower.
Today is Wednesday and I have been struggling with getting them down (and failing) and they have remained quite happily at 20 and rthis despite extra insulin at meal times and correction doses.
Can someone educate me as to why I was not told that extreme blood sugars would be a side effect? It cannot have come from anything else. BTW, I do not suffer with ketones and am happy to treat myself rather than spend hours on a drip in a corridor at A&E!
Anyone had a similar experience after this booster?

Welcome to the forum @Ddraigmor

Sorry you're bloods have gone so high, hope you feel better soon. Maybe it would be worth thinking about increasing your basal too.

I haven't had my booster yet, so don't know how it will affect me, but previous Covid jabs, have affected people in different ways, so I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case with this booster.

Some of my Covid jabs resulted in much lower insulin requirements initially, followed by much higher requirements, whereas one increased my blood sugar from the start, so it wouldn't be possible for anyone to have told me what would happen prior to the jab itself.

You could always report it on the yellow card scheme.

My understanding is that the reaction to any medication or stress on the body (such as a vaccination) could be an increase in blood sugars.
I have had all three vaccines possibly including the Moderna spikefax (I am on a clinical trial for it which is double blind between the “normal“ Moderna and the spike ax version). My reaction to all three have been lower blood sugars. In fact my insulin dose has been reduced by 15% since the first AZ vaccine nearly 18 months ago.
However, when I did get covid, it was very mild except for a rise in blood sugar levels requiring me to temporarily increase my basal by 60%.

Thanks both. The Mystery of Diabetes! :)

I did get full blown Covid which poleaxed me for almost a week and included getting depression which I have never sufered with nor have since, thankfully, However I am glad I have regained control.

I am now tankfully back to normal and in charge but maybe, as individuals, there are some of us who will 'blow high' in instances like this? My son is also a T1 and when he gets over 20 he shows ketones I don't. It's always been something to talk about between us but it happens very, very rarely with me, something my diabetes team says is a bonus!

Thanks for the advice and welcome. Good forum.

To add a type 2 perspective (on meds but not on insulin): my booster in November 2021 (Moderna) caused my blood sugars to drop overall by about 1-2mmol, and my second booster in August 2022 (Pfizer) caused them to rise by about the same amount. For both, it lasted about 2-3 days. I don’t know what the original vaxxes did cos I didn’t have a Libre then.
