Im filling out food diary and Im confused about the following : Do I count salad ?-as in a small plate rocket leaves,1/3 of a pepper,cucumber,1/3 of avocado,a little red onion and some olive oil..I had this along side 2 spicy bean burgers which waere easy to calculate for! (20x2.So 4 cp`s) Im either type 2 or 1 1/2 ,on insulin but producing some.
Thing is my diabetes specialist nurse says no .But I read somewhere on here I think that yes you do ! A little confusing to say the least ! So I would really appreciate if any of u knowledgable people could make any sense of it for me ? Thanks :)

in my opinion i would count every carb i put on my plate but the traditional dietician view is to leave salad and green veg as "free"

your salad just on a rough estimate works out as approx 6-8 carbs in total ( hard to tell exactly without weights of individual ingredients

Many of us include the carbs in everything on the plate. I am one of these. Many of us don't. The answer is really whichever works for you.

I only count food that causes my bg levels to rise. I dont count salad leaves, cucumber, celery but would count onion, peppers, tomatoe and avacardo if a lot of it is eaten. I dont count cabbage, cauliflower but count broccoli, runnerbeans, brussel sprouts, peas, carrots etc. Its trial and error

Thanks for your reply and giving me that rough estimate.:-)

Seems to be an individual thing so? Suppose its trial and error and watch the blood sugars ..Thanku for replying! :-)

Yes trial and error it seems to be..and a guessing game! Thanks for your reply :-)!

Bg testing and trial and error with food will serve you well.

Some apple, pineapple and banana (yellow and green), are fruit that I don't need to do much of a bolus, but I am strange that way

Thanks for your reply strange one haha :-)!

I counts salads into the final carb value as I include items like tomato's, beetroot and coleslaw, but iHs is right @Sobeit and it's all trial & error, just take note of your insulin doses and postprandial bg levels and work from there, once you get it right keep a food diary for future reference.

I'm a Type 1 and I've never counted salad. However, I do count avocados so I'd allow for that.

On the occasions when I've had a ready meal with a carb count on it, I've often found I've gone low even though I've had the correct insulin for the carbs listed. I think this is because they count everything including what I'd call 'free' veg, so that gives a higher carb figure than I'd get if I counted the ingredients. If that makes sense!

I think if you stick to a method then you'll know how much insulin you need for that meal.
