I had the worst pain in my life last week when I experienced 90 minutes of leg Cramps, spasms and numbness affecting both legs. I am a typecl 1 diabetic of 34 years. I have some mild neuropathy to hands and feet. I was on a mild dose of pregablin and this was increased following this episode. I do feel that I am now experiencing more numbness to lower lmbs since this has happened. I have lived with my condition for a long time so know how to manage it and I have a fab consultant. I am also a Nurse so that has helped a bit with my overall knowledge of my condition. My main reason for the question is to see if anyone else has experienced this!

Not quite that bad, but similar - repeated short bursts of cramps followed by the muscles kind of pinging and twitching for a couple of hours. The muscles feel kind of dull for a few days after. I know why my cramps occur though, it's always when my sodium/potassium levels are wrong. Have you had a recent blood test done? Worth checking even if it just rules it out.

Thanks for replying. I appreciate hearing about other peoples experiences Having bloods done this week following this episode.

Thank you for posting this thread. I am new to form and saw my GP today as I am experiencing tingles in my legs and cramp in my feet. She has recommended I follow a ketonic diet (I need to lose about 4 stone!).
I shall watch out for this thread with interest.

I take quinine one every night for cramp. If I don't take it I get cramp on the inner thigh which is agony like your own, takes ages to go,but quinine and plenty of drink, this helps as I can get it in my toes and feet even when taking quinine.

from this website

Athletes, on the other hand, tend to develop muscle cramps when they are exercising. A wide variety of factors can cause muscles to contract painfully. The following are common causes: A mineral deficiency involving potassium, calcium, magnesium and/or sodium.

end of quote

I am certain that you can google for possible mineral and vitamins that might help. having diabetes means that you are simply not absorbing the nutrients as a normal person might

also i found i got terrible muscle cramps on a cold night when camping in a tent so if the night is cold where you are make sure your legs have warmth

i hope this helps

Without meaning to be funny, I have a G&T and that works because of the quinine in the tonic

There are times when it wakes me in the night and I am forced to get out of bed and gingerly limp around the house for a half an hour or so till it eases enough for me to go back to bed. Unfortunately a G&T won't work for me as quinine is a proscribed substance for me do you thin gin would work on it's own if I drank enough.

I can't take quinine tablets as they are not recommended for me due to another drug I take but must admit to having a wee G&T most nights.

Just gin no sorry. I was given potassium tablets to take and that's done the trick. I still have my G&T though:wacky:

Its awful when it disturbsvyour sleep. I think the gin wuld be an interesting experiment but don't think the liver would be too happy!
I'm not giving up my G&T for anything, it's one of my pleasures
