Creatine Kinase raised and fluctuating

Hi All,

I'm on the Low Carb diet (20g-30g a day, 5% of daily nutrient intake) and I was on Astorvastatin and Metformin. I'm having a lot of blood tests by the doc at the moment and he noticed that my CK level was raised. He stopped the statin and after testing liver and kidney function he decided to take me off the Metformin too.

Have any of you guys had problems with this Creatine Kinase being raised or fluctuating at all due to either the diet, exercise, Statin or Metformin?

Obviously, because of the reduced carb intake I have increased my fat (50%) and protein (45%) intake. I am exercising approximately70 mins a day (mostly walking) if this helps.

Hi - I have had no experience of this as a result of LCHF and heave not hear of anyone who has, as a direct result of a low carb diet. My diet is pretty much under 30g a day...but I do eat fibres and fats that ensure my calories are up around 1500-1800 calories a day, and I ensure I take in up to 3 litres of fluid daily. I don't work and do NO real exercise (as I am lazy, other than walking...though never overweight). No increased CK. I don't take metformin, but again, have never heard of it being anything other than positive in relation to such matters. Statins on the other hand are often associated with muscle problems- something like 1 in 400 people I gather, depending on the statin. How high is it? I'd suspect the statin and not the diet. One other thing - thyroid issues? Evidently a common cause of an increase in CK if you don't have normal symptoms. My bet is on the statins as culprit.

I think I've found out why my CK was up. I suspect that it's due to me eating too much protein as a percentage of my intake. I had been eating 50% but have now found I should be on no more than 20%.

I am going to the Acute Medicial Unit at the Hospital this Thursday so hopefully they will confirm that's most probably the cause. Some of the information I've been reading also says Aspirin can raise it too so I'll bring that up too.

I've been taken off three statins due to liver function issues... the first two before I was diagnosed DB. My Lipids are +7 and my GP not really too keen to try them again, which I am okay with.
Exercise has really helped me with my BG control and eating lots of fat.... cheese and an avocado a day...

Hi hankjam,

Glad I'm off the statins too. I've heard very little positives about them and have heard generally life expectancy is often only improved by a matter of a couple of days in the long term.

To be honest if I can get off all medication and manage it with diet and exercise then I'll be a happy chappie.

The way this government is going they'll be scrapping prescription subsidies and the NHS before long and I don't want to be dependent on any drug when that happens.

With regards to eating plenty of fat, I am only really starting to get to grips with managing a high fat percentage while limiting protein intake. I'll get there. Avacados and olives are in as are Almonds, Brazils and Walnuts. I'm going to have to be careful and watchful of the levels for protein and be careful that carbs are not sneaking in.

Myfitnesspaĺ is a godsend in this respect and I doubt I'd be able to do all this without it.

My CK levels have always been astronomical - no matter what happens. The best solution my GP has come up with is that it is due to my exercise routine. I train aerobicaly for fitness (treadmill, bike, cross trainer, rower) typically between 5 and 7 times a week and I train with heavy weights 4 days a week. I was told that even lifting heavy luggage/weekly shopping from the car to the house can cause a rise in CK levels so doing what I do in the gym is going to cause an even bigger spike.
As well as diabetes, I have a minor heart attack in 2007. I take blood pressure and cholesterol medication. My resting heart beat is under 60, My blood pressure this morning was 97/71. Diabetes: metformin, exercise and diet.

It could be that the CK level is raised due to the walking.

I hope this helps a bit and its not intended to replace medical advice - but you are not alone.

Hi Sean01,

I'm sure the walking is definitely contributing. I have gone from no exercise to walking for 75 mins at 6km/hr in a relatively short time. I have always trained in a fleece/sweatshirt so as to sweat that bit more and make my body work that bit harder so that may be worth mentioning to the hospital too.

Brilliant training. I can get up to 6 km/h on a treadmill but for a max of about 5-10 mins. The rest of the time - around 5.5 km/h - but not for 75 mins. That's got to be contributing to the CK figures. Don't stop!

The weight is falling off and the fitness is improving daily. I have to thank my activity tracker for pushing me by increasing my step goal each day. Up to 9388 steps a day now. When I started I capped it at 3000 for the first few weeks and was knackered pushing for that.

Excellent. I was on crutches for 3 years (long story) before I got talked into doing a marathon. I started off with 1-00 meters on a treadmill and just added a bit every day. It took about 15 months but I did 17 miles in the Loch Ness marathon in 2011 and then finished it in 2012 - walked all the way - 7 hrs 24. (Post heart attack and mid to late 40's. Keep improving daily. You never know where you will end up - in my case it was Inverness!!

Some useful information on causes of raised CK:-http://labtestsonline.org.uk/understanding/analytes/ck/tab/test/
