Creatinine

Hi all,

I have just had my latest set of blood test back. All good and within the target range. One thing that I am curious about, however, is creatinine levels in blood. I know that this used to measure the effectiveness of your kidneys. Does anybody know what it should be? Is lower or higher better? I have had a look at some of the resources online but, to be perfectly honest, it confused me more than anything else!

As I said above, all my levels were fine; I am just curious.

Thanks
E

All I can tell you is the result of my own last test, in October last year.

My serum creatinine (XE2q5, whatever that means!) was 56 umol/l. The range given by the lab my GP uses was 50.0 - 120.0 umol/l. Whether mine is at the good or the bad end of the range I don't know, but my GP didn't mention it.

Viv :)

Hiya I'm type 2

The 'acceptable' range according to labs my GP uses is 80 - 115.

Creatinine (I think) is apparently some waste product that should be getting cleared from your blood via the kidneys. If you kidneys start to deteriorate, then they do the job of getting rid of it poorly and you have more of it in your blood sample.

Thanks, Fig and PickledPepper, that's nice to know. When I consider what I've put my kidneys (and liver) through to date . . . all I can say is, I must come from strong stock :o

Thanks all. Mine came back at 39. My GP didn't mention it. Having looked on line there seems to be some conflicting advice regarding acceptable levels. I'm sure if it was anything to worry about they would have said :)
