I had a blood test last week and I am seeing the diabetes nurse next week. My fasting blood sugar levels have dropped considerably are now consistently below 7.0 and I was wondering at what point I should request coming off Metformin. I was thinking of requesting to come off Metformin after my next diabetes nurse appointment in three months time if my levels are low enough by then.

I am not a big fan of Metformin because of the gastric side effects and I have read on here that some people who have adopted a low carb high fat diet have been able to reverse their type 2 diabetes and come off medication.

If you are suffering gastric side effects then you are at liberty to find the cause. If stopping Metformin makes it better then notify your nurse. I left a message with reception.

If you are not suffering any adverse side effects then you can discuss it with your nurse at your next appointment saying that you would prefer not to take them if that's how you feel.

The one course of action I do not agree with is to stop taking them and not tell anybody since your nurse might think you are doing fine on them.

Good afternoon @Art Of Flowers my friend I have cut my Metformin down to one tablet taken at midday as I was in the same mindset as you are,I got my GP to ring me at home and we discussed cutting them down from two 500g a day to one a day he said that I could just as I monitored any changes which might occur, its been two weeks now and everything is fine, hopefully I can stop it altogether on my next Hba1c assessment (6 Months) in March:)
