Does anyone know much about cryotherapy to treat proliferative retinopathy?

I developed proliferative retinopathy last year after starting an insulin pump - I had a lot of laser to the worst-affected eye and things had stabilised. Luckily it was spotted early so it was never too bad - no haemorrhages. However after a year of stability it's now started to progress again and my ophthalmologist says he can't do any more laser in that eye without compromising my vision.

Instead he's recommended cryotherapy to that eye. This (I gather) is to destroy the front part of the retina, which you can't access with laser, and isn't used to see anyway as it's at the front of the eye. I can have it done under general or under a nerve block (general all the way I think!!).

Anyone have any experience of it? Can't find out much about it online, though the papers I've read look promising.

I also have some maculoapthy but no macular oedema, so anti-VEGF is out unless I go privately (which I might do if absolutely necessary).
