I do remember reading that A1c tests can be accurate to +/-0.5% in old money.
So someone with a 6% A1c which is 42 mmol.mol, could actually be 5.5% (37) or 6.5% (48).
It would put someone who is actually pre-diabetic into the normal range or into the diabetic range depending on day of the week.
No wonder they do a 2nd lab draw to confirm.
These cut off points are somewhat arbitrary anyway. Sadly they sometimes reflect the policies of the various countries' health services. Sometimes they are only prepared to treat over a certain point.
