Type of diabetes
Don't have diabetes
Hi,

I am a researcher thinking about developing a project that aims to look at how some forms of bariatric surgery manage to rapidly restore glucose control in the absence of compromising food intake and prior to weight loss.

Very recently such techniques have been recommended as treatment for people with diabetes that cannot control their blood sugar through other options.

The study I want to undertake utilises an animal model of the surgical technique to identify the molecular responses. The aim is to identify the targets, so that we might be able to stimulate the response in the absence of surgery.

I am interested in hearing the opinion of individuals that have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and have struggled with successful control of blood glucose regarding whether they would consider bariatric surgery as an option and if there was an equally effective alternative, what their preference would be.

Many thanks to those that take the time to respond!!

I recommend you take a look at the Newcastle Diet and the Diet Doctor websites :)

This is just my opinion.

I do not think that anyone takes surgery lightly. Many members struggle with bg control and have tried all other options open to them. To some, bariatric surgery is their last best hope so having an additional choice in an effort to better their health that did not involve invasive surgery would be welcome.

I stand to be corrected on all that I have said. As weight has not been an issue for me personally I can only try to imagine what it must be like to be faced with this lack of choice.

I was offered Bariatric surgery at my first GP’s appointment when my Diabetes was diagnosed. I declined to discuss it further as I didn’t realise the significance of this with regards to Diabetes then, I just thought it was suggested as my weight at that time gave me a BMI of 44.3. However since arriving at this forum that night I have adopted a low carb eating plan and self monitoring. As well as controlling my blood sugars I have lost weight to the point where my BMI is 34.6, too light to qualify for bariatric surgery as a diabetic under the NHS! I feel that for me the surgery wouldn’t have been the right course of action and am glad the Dr didn’t actually explain more about it at that first appt. I can see that it would be entirely appropriate for some people though.
