Hello everyone. Have been lurking in the background for a while and reading a lot -what a wonderful resource this is. I'm 50 years old, female and pre-diabetic. I've known about and researched low-carb'ing and known all about why I shouldn't eat sugar for years but I was so addicted - emotionally and physically - that I couldn't even begin. I trained in hypnotherapy years ago and then learned various other complimentary therapies all to try to deal with my emotions. It's been a long (and fascinating)journey into myself and the work is finally beginning to pay off. I've been completely grain free, low carb and sugar free since mid-April. It's early days of course but my FBG and one- and two-hour post-prandial are all in normal range and I'm fully intending to keep them that way. Hope that in no way sounds as if I'm boasting -couldn't be further from the truth. More like if I can do it anyone can! It's been wonderful reading all the helpful knowledge and experience being shared in the forums and I look forward to reading more - thank you!

Hi. Welcome and it sounds like you are winning. I think many of us have found that once we understand the impact of carbs and the 'good' influence of fats and proteins on our metabolism we have been able to accept it as a permanent change of life-style and not just a short-term diet. At least if you ever need to go onto medication you know that you have done your best

Thank you Daibell! You are so right, acceptance is the key. I'm quite excited - it does feel like I'm in control of myself and my diet rather than being controlled by destructive cravings. Almost like I'm a grown up LOL! Happy bank holiday Monday all.

Good job! It's not boasting, it's reporting a success story, and I for one love to hear about successes!

I've found that once I got started on low carb, after the initial settling in period (couple of weeks), all cravings for high carb stuff disappeared. I much prefer the satisfied but not bloated feeling from the LCHF kind of eating approach, and the whole idea of eating something that I know would cause that bloaty feeling puts me off of eating that thing. In fact I'm having to reduce portion sizes now for the same reason - it doesn't seem to take as much food to power your energy needs when your body gets more of its energy from fats. And also, I feel better and more alive, with more energy than I have had in years!

Thank you brdavies! Appreciate the support - and very happy to hear how well you are doing. I do agree with you - it's so much better to feel satisfied as opposed to bloated and uncomfortable. I'm amazed when I catch myself feeling "not hungry" - that hasn't happened in a long, long time. I'm still working on my emotional attachment/addiction to food - I definitely have no physical cravings and even though I haven't eaten any grains/carbs/sugar I'm aware there is still a part of me that's scared I'll fall off the wagon so to speak. So I'm using therapeutic techniques (EFT mainly - a form of psychological acupuncture using finger tapping) to work on that. Just taking it day by day. Had the results for my latest HbA1c - dropped to 5.7%. It's a wonderful thing feeling like I'm in control of - rather than being controlled by - food. Happy days.
