I use my heavy city bike to travel to work and local trips and my current double pannier is a pain in the bum. It attaches with webbing and clips and is an ars* to get on and off and carry around, especially with cold hands.

I've been searching for a double pannier that clips on and off with a shoulder strap but can I find one? No. Separate ones, ones with no strap or flipping expensive ones.

For you cyclists on here, do you know of such a thing or have I ruined my chances of inventing something new by writing about it?

I don't know if a convertible pannier/rucksack would be useful. There are loads on the market, some seem to be better designed than others. But the basic principle is the same for all of them - it is a pannier on your bike and is easily detached to become a rucksack for around the shops etc. Here are a couple of links to some on the web:

I've personally used J E James Cycles before and they are a helpful company, if that helps you.

Thanks for that MrB.

I need a double one. Singles are a pain to get on and off and carry. I once tried cycling with a single pannier, not good! Seems I will have to invent one.

I've got a rack mount bag which just clips on and off the rack. It has side pockets that fold out to make small paniers, and can hold a reasonable amount of stuff and a shoulder strap to carry it when not on the bike.

We got them form Halfords though it was a few years ago now, there are some similar looking ones here http://www.wiggle.co.uk/rack-bags/
