I've been cycling to work for around 2 months now it's around 9 miles each way and I've only missed on day due to a puncture. I have noticed my blood sugars getting worse and worse i.e. higher and higher the longer I continue this regime. I wasn't expecting to see this , for example yesterday I woke up to a 6.2 reading (not very good) , cycled in quite strenuously in around 30 mins and I find myself at 8.7 (just one example) . Is this related to 'short duration' exercise ? I don't get it.

Previously i had confined all my long duration strenuous exercise for the weekend i.e 2-3 hour cycle rides , 20 km runs etc etc and see fantastic results in the blood sugars for days after but family life suffered.

Do you eat before or after the ride into work?

It's well known that sometimes exercise pushes BG up. Bernstein writes a bit about it. Long duration exercise usually lowers BG, so perhaps your exercise was too short for you.

I eat after , although not much as I don't want to inject after exercise. Doesn't seem to have the same effect in the evening ride home so I believe it's now morning insulin resistance / dawn phenomenon related effect. Going to try 1 Unit of rapid tomorrow morning and see what happens. If that doesn't work I'll get up earlier and take the long route :-)

I have recently been diagnoses with Type 1 back in November of 2012 and have started to ride into work this week. It's a 12 mile ride taking approx 45 to 50 minutes. I have found that it has been fantastic in lowering my BG and resulting in less insulin required. I can reduce my evening shot by 4 units, then waking up at 4.5-ish nmol, have a bowl of cereal for breakfast without any insulin and then cycle into work. When I test myself again at work it's around 5.5. I then snack on a couple of pieces of fruit until lunch, again without insulin, and it combats any further drop in BG after the exercise. Hope you get it sorted asap
