Cystitis

Off on holiday tomorrow and have just come down with the symptoms of cystitis, don't actually feel ill with it just all the other symptoms! We are going to the states so no problems with medical care there but any suggestions welcome, at the moment I am just drinking loads which in the short term is more painful but hopefully will flush the infection out.
Used to get this badly when I was younger and ended up with a kidney infection actually haven't had it for ages. Not looking forward to a nine hour flight!! We have to leave for the airport at 12.15 so no time to go anywhere first as the standard waiting time is about four hours and I have stuff to do!! So any suggestions other than drinking lots, can go to the boots at the airport tomorrow.

A bit of informal research with my freinds reveals that we all think you need to drink more than the recommended amount - minimum 2 litres a day and to keep this up for at least a week after symptoms disappear.

don't hold on - go as soon as the urge is there

paracetamol for the pain, hot water bottle

Reduce the acidity of your wee, the over the counter things you can get in Boots are helpful.

Good home made remedy and always works for me. A teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda in glass of tepid water twice a day and plenty of glasses of plain water in between

Another good home remedy is to blend a whole, washed, unwaxed lemon with a bunch of parsley and approx. 500 mls of water. Dilute according to taste and add sweetners or fruit sugar to make sweeter. Drink as often as you can whilst you still hurt and then just one glass a day to keep it away.

The acid in a lemon turns to alkali when it is digested and this will attack the bacteria causing the cystitus.

Thanks all for your advice, tried the bicarb as I had that in the house! And it does seem slightly better, don't actually feel ill either. I just hate airline loos as there is always wet on the floor and it is a nightmare trying to pull your jeans down and not have them drop on the wet floor
Am still drinking lots as well!

Hi Jo123.

Other things that can Alkalise your urine are:
Blue Cheese
Fresh Carrot Juice
Tomato Juice
Orange Juice.

As Sue (metallurgy) says about Lemons there are other fruits too such as oranges, grapefruits (providing you are not on certain statins), tomatoes and pineapples, all are acid when you eat them, but by the process of enzymatic digestion; they are turned into alkaline substances.
